Sino-Belgian joint venture to revive China’s dairy industryPublished: 19 Oct 2009 17:02:01 PSTBy Zhang Wen A newly established Sino-Belgian joint venture brings extraction technology of lactoferrin to China, expected to vitalize China’s crippled dairy industry, an industry official said on Monday when attending the signing ceremony for the joint venture.Belgium-based Taradon Laboratory, together with Beijing New Baili Evergreen International Trade, founded NBL-Perraudin BioTech Development on Monday, aiming at introducing the most advanced production technology into China to produce top quality lactoferrin."The joint venture today is a fruitful project by a healthy and stable bilateral relationship between Belgium and China," said Belgian Ambassador to China Patrick Nijs, "The partnership will also help deepen the lactoferrin research in the area of the dairy industry, infant nutrition, healthcare and the pharmaceutical industry in China, and enhances the academic exchange between Chinese and Belgian scientists."China’s dairy industry has suffered from the financial crisis and the infant-powdered-milk scandal last year. Official data shows, however, it has recovered 90 percent now."New biotechnology from an experienced Belgium company could help reactivate China’s dairy industry and upgrade industrial technology," Mou Jingjun, director of the China Dairy Industry Association, told reporters.Lactoferrin is a globular multifunctional protein with anti-microbial activity and is part of innate defense, and is extracted from bovine milk.
