The new stores will be located in second- and third-tier cities in South China, namely Kunshan, Changshu, Cixi and Hangzhou, said Tino Zeiske, president of Metro Cash & Carry China, adding that these cities have large market potential. Metro plans to continue making investments in China in the coming years and to expand its wholesale network to 42 stores by the end of this year. Despite the global economic recession, Metro’s business in China maintained double digit growth. Last year, the company’s stores in China earned sales revenue of EUR 1.05 billion, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 15%. Metro set up its first Chinese store in 1996 in Shanghai, and currently owns 38 stores across the country.
